Books on Finding Your Purpose - 5 to read

There's something truly magical about the way books have the power to illuminate our paths, especially when it comes to the quest for purpose. As women on this incredible midlife journey, we know that discovering our true calling can be both thrilling and challenging. But fear not, for within the pages of countless books, you'll find wisdom, inspiration, and the collective experiences of others who have walked this path before us. Let’s go for it and delve into new books, turning the pages of inspiration and insight, as we seek to uncover the unique and extraordinary purposes that await us.

I am an avid reader of all books, but in the last few years my shelves have become filled with self-help books including books on finding your purpose. As I embarked on my midlife self-discovery journey the question of what is my purpose always found its way to the top of my list of personal questions.

If you search on Amazon for books on finding your purpose it comes up with pages of recommendations. While there are a number of great books available I recommend the following 5 as a starting place on your book journey for finding your purpose.

I Could Do Anything, If I Only Knew What It Was

"I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" by Barbara Sher is a guiding light for anyone feeling lost or uncertain about their life's direction. In this book, Sher offers a compassionate and practical roadmap to help you uncover your true passions and purpose. Through a series of engaging exercises and personal anecdotes, she encourages individuals to break free from self-doubt and societal expectations, and instead, embrace their unique gifts and desires. Sher's book empowers readers to explore their dreams, identify their strengths, and take bold steps toward a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life. It's a transformative read for those seeking clarity and motivation on their journey to self-discovery and personal growth.

Finding Your North Star, Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live

"Finding Your North Star" by Martha Beck is like a trusted friend on your journey to self-discovery and fulfillment. In this delightful and insightful book, Beck shares practical guidance and heartwarming stories that help you navigate life's twists and turns. She invites you to embark on an inner quest to uncover your deepest desires and values, ultimately leading you to your personal "North Star," your true purpose. Beck's friendly and empathetic tone makes the process of self-discovery feel like an adventure rather than a chore. So, if you're seeking direction, authenticity, and a path to a more fulfilling life, let Martha Beck be your guiding star on this transformative journey.

Simple Abundance: A Day Book of Comfort and Joy

"Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy" by Sarah Ban Breathnach is a beloved daily companion that offers readers a year-long exploration of gratitude, mindfulness, and the pursuit of a more meaningful life. This book guides individuals seeking to infuse their daily routines with a sense of purpose, contentment, and joy. The book contains 366 essays, one for each day of the year, including leap years. Each essay is a brief and thought-provoking reflection on various aspects of life, including simple pleasures, personal growth, gratitude, self-care, and finding beauty in everyday moments. It encourages the practice of mindfulness and offers gentle reminders to take time for oneself. The book is a tool for transformation, helping individuals align their lives with their deepest values and aspirations.

Man’s Search for Meaning

"Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl is a powerful and insightful book that recounts the author's experiences as a Holocaust survivor and a psychiatrist. In this book, Frankl explores the fundamental human need for meaning and purpose in life, even in the face of extreme suffering and adversity. He observed that those who found a sense of meaning and purpose, even in the midst of their suffering, were more likely to survive and maintain their mental and emotional resilience. Frankl coined the term "existential vacuum" to describe the emptiness and despair that individuals experience when they lack a sense of purpose in life. This book serves as a profound reminder that regardless of life's circumstances or age, the quest for purpose and meaning is a fundamental aspect of the human experience. It offers valuable insights for those navigating midlife transitions, encouraging you to seek and embrace your unique sources of meaning and purpose in order to lead more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

The Alchemist

"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho is a bestselling novel that tells the enchanting story of Santiago, a young shepherd who embarks on a journey to discover his personal legend—the purpose or destiny that is uniquely his own. The book beautifully illustrates the theme of finding purpose in life, and it does so through a captivating tale of adventure, self-discovery, and spiritual awakening. "The Alchemist" is a timeless and inspiring story that emphasizes the importance of following one's dreams, listening to one's heart, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery to find one's purpose in life. It teaches us that our personal legend, or purpose, is not something external to be sought but an inner calling that requires courage, faith, and perseverance to uncover and embrace.

I have read each of these books and have found something meaningful in everyone of them. Reading provides an expansion in our thinking. May you find enlightenment and new direction in whatever book you choose. Happy reading!
